On May 26, 2006 the efforts of several hundred citizen lobbist’s for New York State successfully introduced bills A11565 and S8018 to address workplace bullying. This was a tremendous accomplishment for all involved as the effort to locate sponsorship for legislation had only started three months prior. Both Bills call for a study to be conducted by the Department of Labor to seek the frequency of this activity in the workplace and to recommend actions to stop this abuse and harassment.

The introduction of Bills A11565 and S8018 occurred very late in the legislative calendar and little action is expected in 2006 to further these activities being it is an election year.

In January 2007, the NYHWA will be lobbying for the reintroduction of both Bills and work on locating a sponsor for the Healthy Workplace Bill.

To further the effort to introduce the Healthy Workplace Bill, NYHWA is always interested in individuals who are interested in speaking with our state legislators about their experience and why legislation is necessary to address this issue. If you feel you are capable of telling your state legislators about your experience without the anger and bitterness of your situation, please send an email to info@nyhwa.org.

Anger and bitterness is the first stage of healing from being a target of a workplace bully. These are normal reactions to a situation when your health, career and livelihood are being jeopardized and you do not understand what you are going through. Remember, you are a target of this violence in the workplace and not a victim. When you have made that distinction and are ready to tell your story to our state legislators, send us an email. We will welcome another opportunity to show our state legislators and employers why this issue needs to be resolved.
